Discussion and possible action to approve and adopt an application to be used by Commissioners Court in evaluating candidates seeking appointment to fill the vacancy in the position of Judge of County Court at Law 2; and any other matters incident thereto.
Issue:
On January 30, 2017, Webb County Commissioners Court formally accepted County Court at Law 2 Judge Jesus “Chuy” Garza’s letter of resignation creating a vacancy in the office. Pursuant to Texas Government Code §25.009, the Commissioners Court must appoint a person to fill the vacancy in the office of a judge of a statutory court. The Court wishes to allow eligible attorneys to submit their names for consideration to fill said vacancy.
Solution:
In order to assess the qualifications of each potential appointee, the Court shall customize and adopt an application with criteria for evaluating applicants as proposed by the committee which was created during the January 30, 2017 meeting.
Result:
By establishing an application and criteria for reviewing the history and qualifications of each applicant, the Judge and each Commissioner will be able to assess the applicants in order to select the best person to fill the vacancy in the position of judge of County Court at Law 2.
