Subject:

Discussion and possible action to amend the County legislative agenda to include a Resolution in support of online voter registration; and any other matters incident thereto.

Issue: Presently, voter registration applicants can/may complete an application to register to vote online but they still have to print the form and submit it to their local voter registrar either in person or by mail making the process inefficient and time consuming.

Solution: Make the 85^th Legislature aware that the Webb County Commissioners Court supports the passage of an “Online Voter Registration” bill that allows applicants the option of completing and submitting the application online through a secure system.

Result: Gives applicants several options to register to vote in the state.

Background:

The Texas Association of Elections Administrators and the District and County Clerk's Association are in support of allowing citizens the ability to register to vote through a secure online voter registration system. Presently, registered voters are capable of changing their address through the state's online system if they've moved within the same county but a citizen cannot register to vote.

Previous Court Action:

On January 26, 2015, the Webb County Commissioners Court approved a similar resolution for the 84th Legislative session. That resolution was sponsored by Commissioner Tijerina. Unfortunately, the 84th Legislature did not pass that bill.
