Issue: The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force overtime and related fringe benefits budget has been exhausted.

Solution: Approve a budget amendment to cover the estimated overtime and related fringe benefits for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Result: Continue the disruption of organized criminal activity along the Texas border and in Webb County.

Background:

There is evidence that trafficking in narcotics and dangerous drugs exists in Laredo, and surrounding areas. This illegal activity has a substantial and detrimental effect on the health and welfare of the community. The District Attorney's Office has seven task force investigators embedded with DEA to conduct undercover operations. The objective is to disrupt the illicit drug traffic in Laredo and surrounding areas by immobilizing targeted violators and trafficking organizations; therefore minimizing the harmful effects of illegal drugs and organized crime.

Previous Court Action:

The overtime reimbursement agreement between the US Department of Justice and the District Attorney was approved by the governing body on October 11, 2016.
