Discussion and possible action to authorize the submission of a grant application as developed, written, and submitted by and for the Webb County Sheriff's Office to the Office of the Governor Homeland Security Grants Program (HSGP) for a State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grant in the amount estimated at $20,000 for equipment, minor tools, and supplies for the officers of the Webb County Sheriff’s Office; and authorizing the Webb County Judge to execute all relevant documents; and any other matters incident thereto. This grant does not require any type of match; and, thus will have no impact to the general fund. All required documents were sent for review through the Economic Development Department and the solicitation is compliant with the Webb County Single Point of Contact (SPOC) procedures. Issue: Complex and dynamic law enforcement challenges exist in the Southwest border area of the United States, including Laredo/Webb County. Furthermore, the County of Webb/City of Laredo continues to be one of the busiest in-land ports as well as a strategically significant international commerce corridor for the United States.

Solution: Grant application to further enhance the Webb County Sheriff’s Office preparedness to prevent threats, protect citizens, mitigate loss of life and property, and respond quickly to save lives.

Result: Through the grant-funded efforts, the Webb County Sheriff’s Office will be able to address high-priority preparedness goals to strengthen core capabilities to prevent, protect, mitigate, respond, and support community recovery.

Background:

This grant funds homeland security measures in the Laredo/Webb County area to help build, sustain, and deliver core capabilities essential to achieving a secure and resilient Laredo/Webb County community.

Previous Court Action:

The submission of this grant by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office has been approved by the court in prior years.
