Before taking office, persons elected or appointed to any office qualify to hold the office when they take and sign the appropriate oath of office in Article 16, section 1, Texas Constitution. Each person must also file the statement of officer with the local authority prior to assuming the duties of office. If a bond is required for such office, the bond is filed with the oath. Section 604.001, Government Code.
Persons elected to regular terms of office take office on the first day of January following their election, or as soon thereafter as possible. Section 601.003, Government Code.
