Ambulatory Surgical Center services
Submitted for: Nancy Cadena
Submitted By: Debbie Ornelas, Indigent Healthcare Services
Department: Public Health Services

Subject:
Discussion and possible action to approve an Order authorizing the Webb County Indigent Health Care Program (CIHCP) to include Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) services as a covered Optional Service effective immediately. This would allow eligible program clients to have medically necessary procedures performed at surgical centers at the discretion of their medical provider; and any other matters incident thereto.
Background:
If approved, more local providers such as Gastroenterologists and Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists may start to accept clients covered by the Indigent Health Care Program. This will benefit clients as they would not need to travel out of town to get medical services and it is cost effective for the county because clients will get more preventative care that will reduce medical complications and ultimately reduce Emergency Room (ER) visits which are significantly more expensive. During the budget process, the Indigent Health Care Department appropriated funds within the department budget to a new line item for Optional Services in the amount of $100,000; we are just pending formal approval from the Commissioners Court to move forward with these services.
