Discussion and possible action to authorize the Economic Development Department to develop and submit a U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Fire Prevention and Safety grant application under the FY 2017 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for up to $50,000.00, and authorizing the County Judge to act as the Authorized Representative in all matters pertaining to the County's request for Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program funding. If awarded this grant, Webb County Volunteer Fire Department will work in conjunction with the Texas A&M Colonias program to implement the goals of the grant. This application requires a five percent (5%) match, this will be in-kind provided by Webb County Volunteer Fire Department. All required documents were sent for review through the Economic Development Department and the solicitation is compliant with the Webb County Single Point of Contact (SPOC) procedures. Issue: Fire safety campaign development to promote life safety initiatives by assisting rural households with early evacuation during home fires by providing smoke alarms.

Solution: Community risk reduction and education with the distribution of smoke alarms purchased through the AFG: FP&S grant and distributed to rural households.

Result: A more knowledgeable and better prepared rural population, aware of fire hazards, and provided an additional system for faster evacuation.

Background:

The efforts proposed in this FY 2017 Webb County Fire Prevention and Safety grant application will be geared towards outreaching and educating Webb County citizens about fire prevention and fire safety. Webb County, through the Webb County Volunteer Fire Department, will implement activities to provide awareness and education to rural Webb County residents through this grant over its entire coverage area of 3,200 square miles.
