Issue:
The 2016-2017 adopted budget only partially funded the officer slots filled with five (5) post 9/11 U.S. military veterans with funding termination dates ranging from 1/22/2017 to 6/10/2017. These post 9/11 U.S. military veterans will eventually lose their jobs.
Solution:
Direct the budget office to find funding within the general operating budget utilizing salary savings or other viable options to continue to fund these slots and place these slots on the upcoming 2017-2018 Webb County budget.
Result:
Post 9/11 U.S. Military veterans who have faithfully served with the Webb County Sheriff’s Office since 2013 will continue to serve the citizens of Webb County.
Background:
These five (5) U.S. military veterans were originally hired through a 2012 COPS grant, and have proven themselves to be exemplary officers.
Previous Court Action:
The 2016-2017 budget was formally adopted on September 26, 2016.

Financial Impact:
The Webb County Sheriff's Office will be able to retain five (5) highly qualified officers with significant field experience, qualifications, and training due to their service both with the Webb County Sheriff's Office and during their previous post 9/11 military careers.
