Subject:
Discussion and possible action to increase the funding allocation approved by the Commissioners Court on February 24, 2014 in an amount of $5,000.00 (for a total of $10,000.00 for FY 13-14) for rabies vaccines (not to exceed $10.00 per animal) at Webb County-sponsored vaccination drives as part of the county’s continued rabies prevention activities. [Funding provided through Account #001-4300-7400 (County Public Health Service)]
Background:
On February 24, 2014, the Commissioners Court authorized the allocation of $5,000.00 for free or reduced price rabies vaccines (not to exceed $10.00 per animal) at Webb County-sponsored vaccination drives as part of the county's rabies prevention activities.

Through the successes of the first three (3) sponsored events held on March 1, 8 and 29, 2014 at Rio Bravo, El Cenizo and Hwy 59 colonias respectively, Webb County has vaccinated 434 animals.  These drives have not only reduced the threat of a rabies outbreak in our county but have greatly increased the number of animals being vaccinated as a result of the county's funding of the vaccines.  As reflected in the attached survey results, approximately 72% of the animals vaccinated through these drives had never been vaccinated or the vaccinations were expired.

The original funding request estimated only 500 animals to be vaccinated.  However, due to high turnout, this goal was reached before other areas of the county could be served.  In an effort to extend this program to other areas of the county (i.e., Mines Rd area colonias, Northern areas of the county and the rural communities of Aguilares, Bruni, Mirando City, and Oilton), we are seeking the Court's support to increase expenditures for this purpose in an amount of an additional $5,000.00.  Funding is available.
