Discussion and possible action to approve the submission of a joint grant application with the City of Laredo to the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) for a FY 2014 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) for equipment and supplies for the Webb County jail in the amount estimated at $45,491; and designating the Webb County Judge as the authorized official in all matters related to this grant; and any other matters incident thereto. This grant does not require any cash match.

Background:

The City of Laredo/County of Webb is a jurisdiction certified as disparate and must submit a joint application. A disparate allocation occurs when a city or municipality is allocated one-and-one-half times (150 percent) more than the county, while the county bears more than 50 percent of the costs associated with incarceration of the municipality’s Part 1 violent crimes.

Proposed supplies/equipment budgeted in this grant by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office include the following: intercommunication jail facility upgrades (1 6.7 Central Processing Unit, 2 3A Audio Buffer Unit, 2 300A Console Ports, 1 UPS System, 1 system check/programming), 2 communications consoles, 2 mobile computing devices, 26 portable radios/holsters, 5 self-contained breathing apparatuses, 100 handcuffs, 10 leg irons, 6 duty belt flashlights, 6 large LED flashlights, 5 hand held scanners, 50 mattresses, 800 mesh storage units, assorted SORT/REACT Special Teams Apparel/Footwear (30 shirts/10 pairs of foot ware).

Previous Court Action:

The submission and approval of this grant is approved by the Webb County Commissioners’ Court on a yearly basis.
