OLS Transportation
Submitted for: Nancy Cadena Submitted By: Debbie Ornelas
Department: Public Health Services

Subject:
Discussion and possible action to authorize the transportation of Webb County colonia residents via the El Aguila Rural Transit System to the Operation Lone Star event which is tentatively scheduled to be held July 27th to July 31st at Alexander High School; and any other matters incident thereto. Residents will be able to receive FREE health and medical services such as immunizations for children, diabetic screening, blood pressure screening, hearing and vision screenings and sports physicals. The funding for the transportation costs will come from the Indigent Health Care Services Department. [Requested by Nancy Cadena, Indigent Health Care Services Director; Account #001-4101-7002 (Medical Services)]

Issue: Operation Lone Star is an event that provides free medical services to under-served communities throughout South Texas. Since this event takes place in north Laredo, many Webb County residents who live in rural areas are unable to attend this beneficial event due to the lack of transportation.

Solution: The Indigent Health Care Services Department will provide transportation to residents in the rural areas by utilizing the services of El Aguila to allow as many people to take advantage of this event.

Result: Webb County has a high number of uninsured and underinsured residents. By providing transportation to this event, many residents will be able to receive medical services that they would otherwise not have available or accessible to them. Last year round-trip transportation was provided to a total of 78 colonia residents. The total cost for transportation was $234.
