Discussion and possible action to authorize the submission of a ALERRT Training Travel Assistance grant application by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office Grant Writer to the Office of the Governor Public Safety Office Criminal Justice Division in the amount estimated at $25,000 for training/travel assistance for the Sheriff’s Office sworn peace officers; and authorizing the Webb County Judge to execute all relevant documents; and any other matters incident thereto. This grant does not require any type of match; and, thus will have no impact to the general fund. All required documents were sent for review through the Economic Development Department and the solicitation is compliant with the Webb County Single Point of Contact (SPOC) procedures. Issue: Recent tragic events have emphasized the need for enhanced training for peace officers responding to active shooters and other deadly attack scenarios.

Solution: Grant application to provide needed travel assistance for Train-the-Trainer ALERRT trainings for the peace officers of the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.

Result: Peace officers of the Webb County Sheriff’s Office will be able to attend ALERRT Training.

Background:

The ALERRT program was developed by Texas State University after the infamous 1999 Columbine attack. The ALERRT Program is advanced training that emphasizes coordination, communication, and rapid response by and between law enforcement, medical personnel, and school employees.
