Discussion and possible action to authorize the Economic Development Department to develop and submit a Sexual Assault Justice Initiative (SAJI) grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) in an amount not to exceed four hundred thousand dollars ($400,000.00) over a two-year term for the purposes of enhancing the community’s response to sexual violence; and authorizing the County Judge to act as the County's Executive Officer and Authorized Representative in all matters pertaining to the County's participation in the Sexual Assault Justice Initiative. Issue: The community currently lacks the services of a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), vital to the prosecution of sexual assault crimes.
Solution: The County of Webb, together with the Webb County District Attorney’s Office and other community stakeholders, seek funds to enhance the community’s response to sexual violence by ultimately creating and implementing a SART.
Result: The development and submission of a Sexual Assault Justice Initiative grant application for a two-year program that will address sexual violence. The program will be a multipronged approach, partnering several community stakeholders to help serve and protect victims of sexual violence. The proposed program will function using the Full-Time Equivalency (FTE) system; no new hires are proposed.
