Subject:
Recognition and presentation of plaques and certificates of appreciation to Sheriff Martin Cuellar and the Webb County Sheriff’s Office Mental Health Unit by the South Texas Behavioral Health Center for the Sheriff’s and unit’s roles, hard work, and dedication in assisting patients in need of mental health care. [Requested by Sheriff Martin Cuellar and the South Texas Behavioral Health Center]
Issue: There still exists a significant negative stigma surrounding mental illnesses, and often people in need of mental health services go untreated until they reach a severe mental health crisis. Moreover, the community continues to constitute a medically and mental health underserved area, which requires mentally ill youth and adults to travel to out-of-town facilities in order to receive these needed mental health services.
Solution: Sheriff Martin Cuellar and his Mental Health Unit provide transports for mentally ill youth and adults in crisis to out-of-town mental health facilities.
Result: These youth and adults will receive needed mental health services so that they may begin the process of recovery.
Background:
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the South Texas Behavioral Health Center wishes to recognize the hard work of the Webb County Sheriff and his mental health unit.
